75% of Guj’s new cases in A’bad, Surat

Of 539 new cases on Sat, Ahmedabad accounts for 306; Surat crosses 100-mark for first time, reports 103 cases; rest 25% from 23 districts
The month of June has seen cases of Covid-19 surge across the state, with majority from Ahmedabad, followed by Surat. On Saturday, the state reported its second-highest single-day jump so far with 539 cases in 24 hours. Of these, 306 were in Ahmedabad. Surat saw 103 new cases, crossing the mark of 100 for the first time for the first time. Thus the two districts account for 75.8% of Gujarat’s cases on Saturday. New cases were reported from 23 other districts too.
The tally of Gujarat now stands at 26,737, the health department said, while the death toll has reached 1,639 with 20 more patients succumbing to the infection. Surat’s tally has reached 3,057, of which 1,447 cases were reported in June alone.
Ahmedabad district reported 306 new cases during the day, taking the tally to 18,564 cases so far. The death toll reached 1,312 with 16 more deaths.

West A’bad has 60% of micro-containment areas
Majority of the new micro-containment areas announced by AMC on Saturday are in western Ahmedabad, indicating the rise in the number of cases on this side of the river. Of the 30 new spots, 19 are in western parts. Add to that three more from the existing six micro-containment areas, and western Ahmedabad accounts for 22, or 61%, of the total 36 micro-containment areas in the city.
There are 4,520 houses and 19,001 people in the 30 micro-containment areas. The other six have 1,614 houses and 6,228 people in quarantine. Thus, as many as 25,229 people are quarantined in the city. When the first list was announced on May 31, of the 46 areas, 11were in western Ahmedabad. On Saturday, AMC removed 29 spots from this list, while six continue to be in containment.
Central zone, which was once entirely in containment, has just two wards that micro-have containment areas—Asarwa and Shahibaug.

Health infrastructure in Surat is being reviewed and private hospitals are being contacted to prepare for the worstcase scenario in the district, she said.
