ASHLAND, Mass. — After being closed for months because of the COVID-19 crisis, some Massachusetts campgrounds operated by the Department of Conservation and Recreation will reopen starting on July 1, the department announced.

The agency will begin accepting reservations for its campsites starting Monday at 9 a.m.

However, because of coronavirus concerns, reservations will not be accepted for group campsites, yurts, cabins, pavilions, picnic areas, meeting rooms and Safari Field at Scusset Beach. Additionally, daytime visitors will not be allowed.

Multiple campgrounds will also remain closed through the season. Those are: Beartown State Forest, Boston Harbor Islands State Park, Federated Women's Club State Forest, Mt. Greylock State Reservation, Mt. Washington State Forest, Waquoit Bay - Washburn Island and Willard Brook State Forest.

"We apologize for the inconvenience, but feel these are necessary steps for the health and safety of our visitors and staff," officials wrote. "Thank you for your patience and understanding as we all work together to navigate during this unprecedented public health emergency."

Reservations will be accepted online, through ReserveAmerica.com.
