The Porsche 935 Feels Right At Home On The Track – As It Should

Even though the modern-day Porsche 935 could be criticized for being not much more than a modified 911 GT2 RS with unique bodywork, there’s no doubt that this wild track-only beast stands out from its peers and is one of the most intriguing performance cars launched in recent memory.

While it is not unusual for companies like Ferrari and Lamborghini to release track-only specials, it is not so common for Porsche to do the same. In fact, rather than simply launching a track car with concept-car looks, the German automaker drew inspiration from one of its most iconic racing cars: the original 935, lovingly known as ‘Moby Dick.’

Visually, the new 935 is quite a sight to behold thanks to the retro-looking bodywork. Among the most eye-catching features of the car is the towering rear wing that actually produces lots of downforce to stick the car to the tarmac. Being a track car, the 935 also lacks traditional headlights and makes do with a set of small horizontal lights incorporated into the front air intakes.

Porsche is building just 77 examples of the car, meaning the vast majority of us car enthusiasts will never have the opportunity to see one in the flesh. Thus the following video acts as the next best thing, showing a 935 driven at the Zolder circuit in Belgium.

The driver of the car clearly isn’t pushing the track-day special to its absolute limits, but we can hardly blame them. After all, customers in Europe had to cough up roughly €700,000 ($788,000) to buy one, which makes it a rather expensive track toy. Besides, it didn’t seem slow either, and it’s better to be safe than sorry, right?
