Till Saturday, 37 police officials tested positive in the cityBENGALURU: With an addition of 94 cases, the Covid-19 count in Bengaluru crossed the 1,000 mark on Saturday. The total number of cases recorded in the city now stands at 1,076, of which 621 are active cases, and 61 deaths.
Karnataka reported 416 new cases, which took the total Covid tally for the state to 8,697. Nine Covid deaths were reported from across the state on Saturday, three in Bengaluru alone. Saturday’s cases in Bengaluru include 18 international passengers who returned from Dammam, Saudi Arabia.
Several docs now in quarantine
Others include a gynecologist working at an ESI hospital in Rajaji Nagar and five postgraduate medicos at Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, and a Vidhana Soudha staffer. Several doctors who came in contact with the infected doctors have now been quarantined.
Private hospitals roped in
With the increase in the number of cases in Bengaluru, some patients are being admitted to private hospitals that are empanelled to treat Covid-19. “Though a decision on Covid treatment cost in private hospitals is pending, we have made arrangements to admit patients in some hospitals. These hospitals will be paid the appropriate package,” said Jawaid Akhtar, additional chief secretary, health and family welfare department.
The government has so far empanelled 518 private medical colleges and hospitals in the state to treat Covid-19. Bengaluru has 44 such hospitals.
That apart, Haj Bhavan has been equipped with 40 beds and will be used as Covid-19 care centre.
Another cop dies
A 54 year-old head constable, attached to Kalasipalya police station, died of Covid-19 in the wee hours of Saturday. It’s the second Covid death in the force after an assistant subinspector attached to VV Puram traffic police station.
The head constable was among eight police personnel who tested positive on June 18 and shifted to Victoria Hospital. “His family will get Rs 60 lakh — Rs 30 lakh ex gratia and Rs 30 lakh from insurance,” a senior police officer said.
Meanwhile, an ASI attached to Wilson Garden police station was moved o Victoria Hospital on Saturday after he tested positive. Till Saturday, 37 police officials tested positive in the city. Four were discharged, two died and rest are under treatment.
