THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala reported 127
positive cases on Saturday, the state's highest single-day tally yet, and the
second consecutive day that the state's daily Covid tally crossed 100.

Pinarayi Vijayan said that though the increasing number of Covid cases was a matter of concern, the situation was not alarming. "The number of people who got the virus through contact is still very less. But, this doesn't mean that we can lower our guard. We need to maintain strict vigil and the government would take more stringent steps to ensure that social distancing norms and other precautionary measures are followed by everyone," he said.
The CM said shops and commercial establishments were given permission to function by adhering to strict norms. But, it was found that several of them were not following instructions.
In that case, the government would be forced to ask them to shut down.
Of the positive cases on Saturday, 87 were foreign returnees and 36 from other states.
Four people, including a health worker, got the viral infection through contact and 57 people recovered, the CM said.
The highest number of cases were reported from Kollam (24), followed by Palakkad (23) , Pathanamthitta (17), Kozhikode (12), Ernakulam (3), Kottayam (11), Kasaragod (7) Thrissur (6), Malappuram (5) , Wayanad (5),
Thiruvananthapuram (5), Kannur (4), Alappuzha (4) and Idukki (1). The number of hotspots as on Saturday was 111.
The state has so far reported 3,039 Covid cases. Currently, there 1,450 active cases. Close to 1.4 lakh people were under observation, including 2,036 in hospitals. On Saturday alone, 288 persons were admitted in hospitals with Covid symptoms. So far, 1,78,559 samples were sent for testing and the results of 3,193 were still awaited, he said.
“In view of the spike in number of cases in Thiruvananthapuram, strict vigil would be in place. Special police teams have been pressed into service to ensure that the public maintain social distance in markets and bus stops,” the CM said. As many as 4,929 cases were registered across the state on Saturday against people not wearing masks. Also, cases were registered against 19 for violating quarantine norms, the CM said.
