Assam traders call for boycott of Chinese goods

GUWAHATI: Assam Chamber Of Commerce (ACC), an umbrella organisation of traders, on Friday appealed to the people of the state not to procure any Chinese product. The clamour to boycott China-made products has grown in the country after the face-off with the Chinese troops along the LAC which left 20 Indian Army personnel dead in Ladakh’s Galwan Valley.
ACC chairman Rupam Goswami told TOI, “We have appealed to the people and our traders to avoid buying Chinese products as much as they can. ‘Be Indian and Buy Indian’ is the motto which will boost the markets of Indian entrepreneurs. The appeal is not an emotional one but it is a long continuous process which will boost the Indian economy.”
ACC has more than one lakh registered traders across the state.
Goswami, who is also a BJP state spokesperson, said everyone’s cooperation is needed to create an environment where Indian products are given more importance. He said ACC has encouraged everyone to buy Indian products even if the price is little higher or the quality of product is inferior. “We have to give chance to the Indian manufacturers to improve the quality of goods. Our appeal is to make India self-reliant as the Prime Minister has given a call for Atmanirbhar Bharat,” he added.
ACC president Sanjive Narain said, “The need of the hour is to do away with Chinese goods which will be the most befitting reply to our neighbouring country. We have asked all the traders not to procure any Chinese goods. If traders do not procure goods, definitely products will not be available in the market,” Narain said.
Earlier, Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan had appealed to people to boycott products from China while his ministerial colleague Ramdas Athawale said all restaurants and hotels that sell Chinese food in India should be closed down.
