AGRA: Four back-to-back road accidents on Yamuna expressway and Agra-Lucknow expressway claimed nine lives including minors and injured eight others.
According to expressway authorities, falling asleep on the steering wheel was the major cause behind all the four road accidents.
The first accident occurred at 3.58am near 107 milestone of Yamunapar police limits, Mathura district, after a speeding sedan hit a truck, killing three and injuring one on Yamuna expressway. Deceased victims were identified as Sumer Chandra (42), his wife Jayshree Deep (40) of Shahjahanpur village of Saharanpur district, and the car driver Amit Kumar (36) of Dadri, Yamunagar district Haryana. The injured victim was Sanjeev Pal.
CO Sadar Ramesh Chandra Tiwari said, "The four victims were heading Yamunagar from Raipur, Chhattisgarh. The driver of the car fell asleep and lost control over the vehicle, hitting into rear of a truck. The impact of accident was such that the entire car was turned into metal of scrap with unconscious bodies."
Second accident occurred at 5.30 am near 53.700 kmstone of Nasirpur police limits, Firozabad district, after a speeding hatchback hit a parked truck, killing five and injuring one, on Agra-Lucknow expressway. Deceased victim were identified as Ravinesh Pandey, his wife Ruby Pandey, his four year old son Lakshay Pandey, nephew Keshav Pandey (17) and niece Nandani Pandey. The lone survivor victim’s sister-in-law Priyanka Pandey has been admitted in critical condition at Firozabad district hospital.
Iraj Raja, CO Sirasganj said, "Prima facie it seems that victim Ravniesh fell asleep while driving and lost control of the vehicle, as it went from extreme right lane to left lane and hit into stand-still truck.” The truck was parked since Friday night. After the accident, the truck driver attempted to flee away with vehicle, but was detained at Kanpur Dehat.
Deceased Ravinesh was senior sales executive in New Delhi and was heading with his family to his native village Muza of Praygaraj district.
Third accident occurred at 6.45am near km stone 34 of Fatehabad police limits of Agra district, after a speeding SUV hit a standstill pick-up truck, killing the SUV driver. Deceased victim was identified as Sudhir (45) of Sevrajpur, Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh.
Parvesh Kumar, SHO Fatehabad said, “The victim fell asleep while driving and hit rear of pick-up truck which had suffered double tyre burst and was barricaded with reflectors by expressway patrolling team.” The victim was coming from Lucknow side.
The fourth accident occurred at 7 am near 94 kmstone of Karhal police limits of Mainpuri district, leaving six injured including a two-year-old kid critical.
Jagdish Singh, chief security officer of UPEIDA patrolling team said, “The car hit into divider before turning turtle. The victims were sent to hospital for first aid."
