Representative imagePATNA: Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) personnel seized Rs 18 lakh of Nepalese currency at Jamunia border post located just near Indo-Nepal international border while two youths were trying to transport it on a bike to Nepal on Friday.
The post is mere 500 meters behind border in Ghorasahan block of Motihari in East Champaran. SSB sources said it’s biggest seizure of Nepalese currency till now on border. While one of the detained youths was a minor aged around 17 years, another was identified Vikash Kumar, aged around 26 years. Both are natives of Ghorasahan.
The seizure took place after heightened alert on international border due to several reasons including an incident of firing on villagers from Sitamarhi inside Nepalese territory killing one of them.
SSB Patna frontier IG Sanjay Kumar on Saturday told TOI over phone that both were handed over to customs officers along with money who were quizzing to know from whom they had picked up consignment and where it was to be delivered.
“We interrogated both but nothing clear surfaced. We thus asked customs on Saturday to interrogate them again. Customs suspected money had accumulated from business or lending which was being transported to Nepal but we have urged them to know the exact motive of transporting it,” IG said adding both detained youth were only carriers.
Kumar said SSB has clear guidelines on Indian currency mentioning one can carry only Rs 2 lakh at a time to any side in denomination of Rs 100 or Rs 200 but there is no guideline on Nepalese currency due to which customs was roped in.
A senior SSB field officer preferring anonymity, said both carriers were acting suspiciously after which they were stopped for checking which panicked them more. “They came towards post on a bike and went back to return again attempting to go to Nepal. This created suspicion,” he said.
“None came to claim money yet. Both were to receive Rs 1000 each to transport money. They only said consignment was picked up from a trader at Ghorasahan only but didn’t told anything where it was to be delivered in Nepal,” he said.
He said people carry Rs 10000 to even Rs 3-4 lakh Nepalese currency at a time generally but they had never stumbled upon such huge amount in past.
