Day 20 of coronavirus unlock 1.0: Ground report from Indian cities

NEW DELHI: As of Saturday, total number of coronavirus cases in India stood at 3,95,048 while the total deaths stood at 12,948, according to the Union Health Ministry data. The number of recoveries continued to surge with 2,13,830 patients cured so far, while there are 1,68,269 active cases, according to the updated official figures at 8 am.

BENGALURU
- A state health department’s projection based on current pace of spread indicates that the number of Covid-19 cases in Karnataka will hit the 1-lakh mark by August 15.
- Bengaluru recorded 138 Covid-19 cases — its highest in 24 hours — and seven deaths on Friday, taking the city’s caseload to 982 and the toll to 58.
- While the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) has given its class 10 and 12 candidates the choice to either take the pending exams or opt for pre-board or internal assessment (IA) marks, students in Bengaluru are a divided lot.
- Twenty two new Covid-19 cases reported in Mysuru taking tally to 151.
- Students staying in paying guest (PG) accommodations in Bengaluru are being forced to shell out almost the entire rent amount even though they have been away in their hometowns for the last two months.
- Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa’s home office ‘Krishna’ was shut for sanitisation on Friday after the husband of a constable working there tested positive for coronavirus.
- The divisional office of South Western Railway in Bengaluru shut on Friday after a staffer tested positive.

MUMBAI
- The Covid-19 infection has claimed yet another life of a policeman in Mumbai, taking the total number of police personnel dying due to the infection across Maharashtra to 46.
- BMC has finally started deploying teams outside railway stations to screen passengers with electronic thermometers. Also, ambulances have been parked for emergencies.
- Parts of Borivli, Kandivli may see total shutdown.
- In North Mumbai, police have enforced complete lockdown in parts of Malad East.
- Major organisers call off dahi handi festivities owing to Covid-19 spread.
- Dharavi, Asia’s largest slum, is not the only urban congested sprawl to witness a drastic drop in Covid-19 cases. A similar trend is emerging in Mumbai’s other slum pockets as well.
- For the first time in the past couple of months, some of the major hospitals treating critical Covid-19 patients in Mumbai are left with vacant beds.
- In a move aimed at easing procedures for the bereaved, dead bodies will no longer be tested for Covid-19 in Mumbai or other parts of Maharashtra, said a state government directive issued on Friday evening.
- Maharashtra on Friday added 3,827 Covid-19 cases, its highest single-day addition so far, taking the total cases in the state to 1,24,331.

CHENNAI
- Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Saturday denied reports that higher education minister K P Anbazhagan is down with Covid-19.

- Police has intensified vehicle checking during lockdown in Chennai and three neighbouring districts.
- The vegetable markets at Nammalwarpet near Otteri in Chennai and Chintadaripet witnessed significant crowds.
- The death of a police officer in Chennai from Covid-19 and 868 personnel testing positive for the disease across the state have shaken field-level personnel and officers alike in the police force. Many have been cured and are back on duty, but officers have been motivating their personnel to be ready to face the unknown enemy.
- The 12-day lockdown imposed in Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpet districts from Friday is giving the Tamil Nadu e-Governance Agency a tough time. Problems for the agency, which is working with one-third staff, have multiplied as companies and individuals have made multiple requests for passes.

DELHI
- Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal at today's SDMA meeting opposed LG Anil Baijal's decision of 5-day compulsory institutional quarantine for Covid-19 patients. He said this will make people evade testing which will further increase the spread of infection.
- Centre's decision of making 5-day institutional quarantine compulsory for Covid-19 patients in Delhi is wrong. I am a corona patient and recovering at home. Due to this 5-day institutional quarantine, people will now refrain from getting tested, said AAP MLA Atishi.
- A consensus could not be reached at today's SDMA meeting on rates of beds at private hospitals and LG's order of ending home isolation. Another meeting will be held at 5 pm today, says Delhi deputy CM Manish Sisodia.
- The Supreme Court on Friday sought a status report from the Delhi government on progress in construction of a new trauma centre in Dwarka.
- Delhi health minister Satyendar Jain receives plasma therapy, kept under ICU monitoring for 24 hours.
- With the number of the novel coronavirus infections soaring, Delhi government has decided to engage volunteers from NGOs, NCC, NSS, Scouts and civil society to strengthen the fight against Covid-19. The idea is to make the fight a mass movement.
