PRAYAGRAJ: A migrant woman travelling in a special train delivered a boy on platform number five of Prayagraj Junction on Friday. The woman and her husband were travelling in Brahmaputra Mail from New Delhi to Bhagalpur in Bihar.
With Friday’s delivery, migrant women have delivered 18 children while travelling in different Shramik Special and passenger trains during the lockdown, under North Central Railway (NCR) stations.
Public relations officer of NCR (Prayagraj division) SK Gupta said, “A 22-year-old woman Pooja Devi gave birth to a healthy baby at platform number five of Prayagaraj Junction.”
“The woman was travelling from New Delhi to Bhagalpur along with her husband Sadanand Kumar in coach S-2 on berth number 79 and 80. The train is among the 100 special trains being operated by the Indian Railways (IR) for migrants stranded in different cities during the lockdown,” said Gupta.
Around 8am, the control room was alerted that a woman passenger was experiencing labour pains, just before the train was supposed to arrive at Prayagraj Junction. “By the time doctors could reach her, the train had halted at the station. The doctors were on their way to help the Pooja, when she delivered the baby with the help of fellow passengers,” he added.
“The team led by Dr Parvez Ahmad attended the woman and her newborn on platform number five. After administering the required first-aid, Pooja and her mother were taken to the district hospital,” said Gupta.
“So far, NCR doctors with help other officials have provided medical help to pregnant travellers in Shramik Special trains and assisted in the delivery of 18 babies,” said chief public relations officer of NCR Ajeet Kumar Singh. Of these, 10 were born under Prayagraj division and four each under Agra and Jhansi divisions of NCR, he added.
