Voting for the elections to fill the vacant 19 seats in Rajya Sabha began today. The polls to the Upper House seats from seven states were earlier scheduled to be held on March 26.

- The Delhi High Court has directed authorities to treat as a representation a PIL seeking free masks, free food twice a day and water in all of the over 200 containment zones in the national capital.
- A bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan said the petitioner had not made any representation to the authorities for the various reliefs, including allowing entry of technical or service personnel and door-to-door delivery of essential goods in such zones.

Nearly 80 million people forcibly displaced globally at the end of 2019: UN
- Nearly 80 million people were forcibly displaced globally by the end of 2019 as a result of war, violence, persecution and other emergencies, according to the United Nations.
- The UN refugee agency, UNHCR, in its annual report on displacement released on Thursday noted that an additional 11 million people were newly displaced in 2019 alone, with developing countries the worst-hit. The number is almost double the total figure over the past decade.

Tata Power to develop 100 MW solar project in Maharashtra
- Tata Power of Friday said its wholly-owned arm has bagged a contract to develop a 100 MW solar project in Maharashtra.
- "Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) has received a letter of award from Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co Ltd. (MSEDCL) to develop a 100 MW solar project in Maharashtra," the company said in a filing to BSE.

- Amid the Indo-China border standoff, the Ram Mandir trust has put on hold its plan to begin the construction of the temple in Ayodhya.

- The state government took the decision on Thursday night saying “this is the least we can do for our brave” soldiers.
- “Punjab Government has decided to increase the ex gratia amount for our soldiers killed in action from Rs 10 lakh to Rs. 50 lakh, along with a job to the Next-of-Kin," Chief Minister Amarinder Singh tweeted.

- The United States has reduced its troop presence in Afghanistan to 8,600, fulfilling its obligation as part of a February deal with the Taliban, the general who oversees American forces in that region said Thursday.

Nursing homes represent more than 1 in 4 COVID-19 deaths
- Nursing home residents account for nearly one in 10 of all the coronavirus cases in the United States and more than a quarter of the deaths, according to an Associated Press analysis of government data released Thursday.
