This suggestion was given to chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar during his Gurugram visit on Tuesday by MLA Sudhir Singla.
“After receiving multiple feedbacks and suggestions from residents, I proposed to better complete lockdown for 10 days, this will help us better our health infrastructure, clear testing backlog and take steps to check the spread,” said Singla adding that cases have increased in the district ever since the relaxations were announced.
Singla stressed markets and streets are getting crowded as residents have become casual about the virus and social distancing is not being maintained at several places. “Open ground near Leisure Valley Park can be used to make it temporary mandi for vegetables and fruits,” said Singla, adding that the ground has enough space to accommodate a large number of people by maintaining social distancing. All the shops and markets should not be allowed to open at a time. It is important to scatter the crowd.
According to sources, police and health department officials were also in favour of Singla’s proposal while some senior officials were against it. Khattar has directed a meeting with stakeholders—businessman, market association, RWAs, industrialists, social groups and other sections of the society to get their feedback and explore the pros and cons of such a move.
When TOI spoke to a few residents, they too seemed to be in favour of the complete lockdown for a limited period. “Lockdown for a limited period is a good idea,” said Atul Banshal, RWA president of The Villas in DLF Phase 2.
But a few argued that economic activities need to continue. “The economy needs to be brought back on the track. Lockdown has caused huge damage and we cannot afford another lockdown,” said Praveen Sharma, who owns a manufacturing unit in the city.
