Representative imageNEW DELHI: The mercury on Thursday breached the 46 degrees mark in parts of the capital ahead of a spell of pre-monsoon showers, which is expected to bring light rain on Friday night.
IMD expects the mercury to drop below the 40 degrees Celsius mark by June 22. The met department, on Thursday, said present meteorological conditions were not likely to see south-west monsoon progress any further until June 21, with it touching more parts of Uttar Pradesh from June 22-24. The pre-monsoon showers, it added, was likely to reach Haryana and NCR only by June 25.
"Due to the present meteorological scenario, the southwest monsoon is not likely to progress further till June 21. Conditions are likely to become favourable thereafter for further advance of southwest monsoon into some more parts of UP and parts of western Himalayan region between June 22 and June 24," IMD stated in its daily bulletin.
The rains are likely to come as a relief for Delhiites, with the mercury gradually rising over the last few days. While Delhi's base station - Safdarjung - only recorded a high of 42.5 degrees Celsius on Thursday, the temperature touched 46.4 degrees Celsius at Ayanagar - almost seven degrees above normal. Pusa station, meanwhile recorded a high of 45.1 degrees, while Palam sizzled at 44.2° Celsius.
The city's humidity levels have also remained on the higher side, oscillating between 38% and 81%, over the past 24 hours. The Met department forecasts another hot day on Friday, with the maximum temperature expected to touch 43 degrees Celsius. By the evening, however, there is a possibility of parts of the city receiving light showers, officials claimed.
Meanwhile Delhi's air quality was classified in the 'satisfactory' range with an overall AQI of 95 on Thursday. Experts forecast the AQI to improve even further in the coming days due to rain and gusty winds.
