A total of 49 people lost their lives due to the deadly coronavirus in Tamil Nadu, which also registered more than 2,000 fresh cases for the second consecutive day on Thursday, the Health Department said. Of the 49 deaths, 40 were from Chennai. The city toll is 501 and the State toll is now 625.

Chennai: Chennai has the highest death toll across TN, followed by Chengalpattu with 38 and Tiruvallur with 32. The total number of people who tested positive till date in the state is 52,334, the bulletin said. Of the 26,736 samples tested on Thursday, 2,091 people turned out positive for COVID-19 in TN on Thursday besides 50 returnees from other States and countries.
