Goa has been receiving highest rainfall in the country since June 1, recording second highest daily average rainfall count.

The state has received 72 per cent excess or above-normal rainfall of 819mm between June 1 and June 18, ten times more than India’s average for that period.

The state received 159 per cent above-normal rainfall (85.8mm) on June 18, which is 12 per cent above India’s average, making it the second highest state in daily rainfall count after Sikkim, IMD data show.
The 24-hour rain spell on June 18 (Goa Revolution Day) gave the historic day the distinction of season’s ‘wettest day’ in the state.

Since the onset of monsoon this year, Goa has recorded 819 mm of rainfall, more than one fourth of its seasonal normal of 2975.6 mm.

Last year Goa had scripted a history in receiving highest rainfall of 3782.1 mm (between June 1 and September 12), ‘outperforming’ bigger states like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Union territories of Dadar and Nagar Haveli, Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
This year, the coastal state is leading among six states – Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat – in receiving excess rainfall between June 1 and June 18.

According to the figures available on the website of the Union ministry of earth and sciences, between June 1 and June 18, the second wettest state in India during this monsoon period has been Maharashtra that received 172 mm rainfall as against 98.6 mm normal rain; Chhattisgarh got 140mm as compared to normal 72.7mm rainfall; Telangana received 121.9 mm (above normal rainfall) followed by Madhya Pradesh (112.6mm). Gujarat received 86.1mm about 44mm more than normal rainfall which was 105 per cent excess rains.

Interestingly, the state-wise average daily rainfall graph published by the India meteorological department shows Goa as the second highest along with northeastern states like Sikkim and Meghalaya.
The state received the most rain in the country on the single day of June 18.

The state-wise average rainfall graph of June 18 showed Sikkim is leading in the daily rainfall graph by receiving 232 per cent excess or above normal rain (50.5mm) followed by Goa which received 159 per cent excess rain of 85.8mm as compared to 33.1mm normal rains. Meghalaya got 150 per cent above normal rain. Jharkhand received 121 per cent excess rainfall and Chhattisgarh got 114 per cent
excess rain.

According to the senior IMD official, the situation will remain more or less same for the next few days; if this trend continues then Goa will clearly emerge as the place with maximum rainfall in the country this season.

North Goa district received 66 per cent above normal rain between June 11 and June 17, and South Goa district got 65 per cent excess rainfall.
