MUMBAI: Maharashtra on Thursday added 3,752 new Covid-19 cases, the highest in a day so far, pushing its total case tally to 1,20,504. It also added 100 fatalities, taking the total deaths due to Covid-19 to 5,751, inching close to the 6,000 mark. Out of the 100 deaths reported on Thursday, 99 were from Mumbai region and one from Nagpur. The previous highest case count for a day was 3,607 on June 11.
But the public health department said the state had bettered its doubling rate from 20.1 days on May 31 to 25.9 days on June 16. It also said weekly average growth rate of cases was 3% on June 16, down from 4% on May 31 and further lower than 7% on April 30.
The number of active cases in the state are 53,901. The case fatality rate of the state registered a slight dip and was 4.77% on Thursday.
Mumbai recorded 1,288 cases, taking its tally to 62,875. The city also saw 67 deaths, which took its toll to 3,311. Civic officials said while admissions in critical cases have dipped marginally across tertiary hospitals, it would be early to predict a dip.
Officials said for the first time in weeks, there were vacant beds in Parel's KEM Hospital. Dean Dr Hemant Deshmukh said daily admissions have dropped to 30 after nearly double that number about ten days ago. "It could be due to better distribution of cases now across the city. We will have to analyse," he said.
A concern has been infections among essential service providers. Cases in BEST crossed 500 on Thursday. Nearly 1,800 BMC employees have tested positive so far.
Seven deaths were reported in Thane, taking the toll to 182 there even as 164 fresh cases, including those of three doctors, were added. Thane now has 5,579 cases. The Thursday toll there includes a six-month-old baby who was admitted to a Mumbai hospital recently after testing positive. "The infant had a congenital heart defect," said a municipal official.
On Thursday, BMC provided 102 ICU beds at its facilities: 24 at Cooper Hospital, 20 at Rajawadi, 20 at Seven Hills al, 30 at its BKC facilities and 8 at its NSCI facility.
