As the Central and state governments allow phase-wise relaxation in curbs to get the life up and running again following over two months of lockdown to prevent the spread of Covid-19, we bring you the latest updates from Mumbai.
* Update at 10.01am: Highest single-day spike of 13,586 Covid-19 cases pushes India's tally to 3,80,532; death toll rises to 12,573 with 336 new fatalities
*Chief minister Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday called for low-key Ganpati celebrations this year in view of Covid-19, and urged mandals to undertake social welfare programmes. The 10-day festival begins on August 22.
*The number of Covid-19 cases in BEST crossed the 500 mark on Thursday. Members of the workers’ union stood outside bus depots in protest, demanding proper protection for all drivers and conductors.
*KEM Hospital’s central canteen recently emerged as a coronavirus hotspot after 21 servers tested positive. At the Parel hospital that has been treating hundreds of Covid-positive patients in its wards, the canteen cluster has incidentally turned out to be the biggest so far within the campus.
*Mumbai hospitals have been given an ultimatum to declare Covid-19 deaths if they haven’t done so in the past three months as BMC begins another reconciliation exercise.
*Screening of vegetable and fruit vendors, and grocery and medical staff for their body temperatures is fast becoming the new normal in the city, since Covid-19 cases have been rising among those who shop for essentials.
*Maharashtra on Thursday added 3,752 new Covid-19 cases, the highest in a day so far, pushing its total case tally to 1,20,504. It also added 100 fatalities, taking the total deaths due to Covid-19 to 5,751, inching close to the 6,000 mark
