Porsche has two high-performance models - one petrol, one electric - but how do they compare? That's the question Press Association asks by stacking the latest 911 Turbo S against the carmaker's first every electric vehicle the Taycan. 

Let's look at the data

The Taycan is powered by two electric motors, one on the front axle and one on the rear axle, thus making it an all-wheel drive offering. 

There are three models available, starting with the Taycan 4S packing 390kW and 640Nm courtesy of an 800-volt battery. It can accelerate from standstill to 100km/h in four seconds. This model has a range of 407km, according to Porsche.  

The Turbo S bites back with some serious figures from its 3.8-litre twin-turbo six-cylinder engine. Top speed is a 330km/h and it now makes more power than its predecessor with a dizzying 478kW and 800Nm. 

But wait, that's not all. The Taycan has a trick up its sleeve in the form of higher powered model labeled Turbo. We know it's a confusing name because it has no turbos. 

What it does have is 500kW and 850Nm and takes just 3.2 seconds to 100km/h from standstill with the top of the range Taycan Turbo S capable of hitting that in 2.8 seconds.  The Taycan Turbo's top speed is 260km/h and is well and truly beaten at the top end by the petrol-powered 911.

The 911 Turbo S is on sale in South Africa, with the 911 Turbo S Coupé and Cabriolet are priced at R3 771 000 and R3 956 000, respectively. Included in the price is a three-year or 100 000km Driveplan. 

The Taycan 4S priced at R2 586 000, the middle of the range Turbo model costs R3 426 000 and the flagship Turbo S model is priced at R4 027 000. 

Porsche South Africa has confirmed that order books are indeed already open for the Taycan, and first deliveries are expected later this year, or early 2021.
