Workers begin returning to Maharashtra as businesses begin operations

Factory workers and labourers who had left Maharashtra for their home States at the beginning of the lockdown have started returning to the State and resuming work.

As the lockdown has been relaxed, various industries have started operating in the State.

Places such as Gondia, Nandurbar, Kolhapur, Nagpur and Pune are receiving about 5,000 such workers per day while in Mumbai, Thane and the Navi Mumbai belt, a major business and economic region, about 11,500 workers are arriving every day, a press statement issued by the State Home Department said.

The Home Minister of Maharashtra, Anil Deshmukh, said in a statement that the State Government is receiving updates from other governments about the arrival of such workers and appropriate precautions are being taken by the police. A proper record is being maintained and they are undergoing a medical examination with thermal scanners for any illness,

All the workers are being stamped on their hands and sent to their place of residence for home quarantine. Their travel arrangements in the Mumbai region is being handles with the help of BEST Undertaking buses.

The number of workers returning will increase as more businesses open up in the State, Deshmukh said.
