CHENNAI: PMK leader
S Ramadoss on Thursday said that the 12-days
lockdown starting June 19 should be strictly followed to control the spread of Covid-19 in Chennai and its neighbouring districts.
“The government should scale up testing during this period and identify all those who have been infected,” he said.
Stating that cases in Chennai increased by five times in the last one month, he said not following safety measures was the main reason for this increase. “The number of cases went up to 35,556 on June 17 from 7,117 on May 17,” he noted.
Ramadoss urged people in the lockdown districts to comply with the rules and regulations and said the spread of Covid-19 chain should break.
Chief secretary K Shanmugam and Chennai police commissioner A K Viswanathan said the lockdown would be enforced strictly and legal action would be taken against people who violate it. Vehicles would also be seized.
Former Union health minister and PMK’s youth wing president Anbumani Ramadoss urged the state government to hand over the Covid-19 care centres to the National Institute of Siddha which claimed to have cured 160 Covid-19 patients in five days. The institute also urged the government to do the same.
