Mumbai: Man shot at in Chembur over old enmity

Saddik Inayat Khan was shot at by a local criminal on Thursday
MUMBAI: A 38-year-old man, who had helped his brother-in-law in getting bail in a criminal case, was shot at by a petty criminal in Chembur area early on Thursday.
Navnit Singh Rana, the accused, also threatened neighbours of Saddik Inayat Khan after firing two rounds at him at PS Thorat Marg at around 4am.
Khan, who received two bullet injuries, is recovering at Sion hospital and is said to be out of danger.
The Tilak Nagar police later arrested Navnit Rana and two of his associates and are looking for one more suspect.
Khan, a tailor by profession, stays with his wife Mehrun and three kids in a rented room in Wazir Baba chawl. At around 3.40am, Khan’s wife received a call from a neighbour asking her not to sent her husband out as Navnit Rana, a local goon, with whom Khan family have crossed swords, was waiting outside the chawl with a revolver.
``She immediately woke and alerted her husband. By the time, Navnit and his three accomplices started knocking Khan’s door and provoked him to come out of the house. When Khan did not opened the door, Rana fired one round on the door and the bullet pierced through Khan's left hand. Another accused Sameer Tolkar looked through the door and told Rana that Khan was holding the door so he should shoot in the centre and kill Khan. And as per direction, Rana fired another round that his Khan on his shoulder and he fell down," said a source.
After hearing Mehrun’s cries for help their neighbours rushed to Khan’s house, where Rana threatened them not to go to help him or they too will meet the same fate. It was only at around 5am when Rana and his accomplices left, the neighbours rushed Khan to Rajawadi Hospital and from there to Sion hospital.
Mehrun later lodged a complaint against Rana and his three accomplices Tolkar, Raunak Patel and Yasin Ansari for attempt to kill her husband.
Tilak Nagar police said that Rana was angry with Khan because the latter had helped his brother in law Salim Siddiqui get bail.
There is a rivalry going on between Rana and Siddiqui. Siddiqui had assaulted Rana after which Siddiqui was arrested by the Tilak Nagar police. Khan and Mehrun had helped Siddiqui procure surety bail and since then, Rana wanted to take revenge.
``Rana couldn’t attack Siddiqui and Khan became a soft target for him,’’ said police.
