PUDUCHERRY: The Union territory of
Puducherry recorded the highest-ever spike of
Covid-19 positive cases in a single day on Wednesday. Thirty more people, including seven workers at a
mask stitching unit, tested positive for the infection on Wednesday taking the total number of reported cases to 246 in the territory.
An 80-year-old man from VVP Nagar in the town limits died of Covid-19 in Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer). The patient with renal complications, who was a relative of a worker at the laundry unit in Jipmer who tested positive for Covid-19 earlier, did not respond well to the treatment and died.
Six people, including a patient from Tamil Nadu, have died of Covid-19 in Puducherry so far. A Puducherry resident from Mahe died in Kerala.
Presently there are 131 active cases in the territory. As many as 100 patients are undergoing treatment in Indira Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute (IGMC), an exclusive facility to treat Covid-19 patients, 20 in Jipmer, five in Karaikal Government General Hospital, four in Mahe Government General Hospital and one each in Delhi and Maharashtra.
Health minister Malladi Krishna Rao said all the patients were Tamil Nadu or Maharashtra returnees, international passengers and their contacts.
Eleven patients, including a Puducherry resident undergoing treatment at Chennai, recovered and were discharged on Wednesday taking the total number of people discharged to 110.
Healthcare authorities have sent 10,929 swab samples for testing of which 10,511 samples tested negative. The test results of 189 are awaited.
