As the Central and state governments allow phase-wise relaxation in curbs to get the life up and running again following over two months of lockdown to prevent the spread of Covid-19, we bring you the latest updates from the city and across the state.
* Update at 9.34am | 2,003 deaths and 10,974 new Covid cases in the last 24 hours. The total number of positive cases in the country now stands at 3,54,06, including 1,55,227 active cases, 1,86,935 cured/discharged/migrated and 11903 deaths: Ministry of Health and Family Welfare
* The state government, which has already urged private hospitals to join the fight against the pandemic, is now planning to set up Covid-19 Care Centres (CCCs) across the state to treat very mild, mild and asymptomatic cases.
With cases spiking, the government is looking to augment infrastructure and establish CCCs on the lines of ones in Tamil Nadu. Officials have already begun the task of zeroing in on buildings — community halls, schools, medical colleges, stadiums and hotels and the likes — that can be converted into CCCs. Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has already identified five locations and commissioner BH Anil Kumar said CCCs at these locations will be functional soon.
*Karnataka primary and secondary education minister S Suresh Kumar on Tuesday said SSLC examinations will start on June 25 and nearly 90% of the 8.5 lakh candidates have downloaded hall tickets, signalling there will be no rethink on the exam process.
To ensure safe conduct of the exams, the minister said prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure will be imposed in a 200-metre radius of exam centres to avoid crowding around the premises. The ban order will be invoked for II PU English exam, too, on June 18.
* Facing shortage of medical staff at state-owned institutional facilities, the Karnataka government on Tuesday decided to directly recruit close to 2,000 doctors rather than the Karnataka Public Service Commission route.
The state government issued special rules for direct recruitment of 1,924 senior medical officers, specialists, general duty medical officers and dental health officers
* Owing to the spiralling Covid-19 cases in the state, the government is likely to take up random sample testing across groups of population in line with suggestions from experts.
The groups which may have been exposed to the virus and which will come under random testing are autorickshaw drivers, cops, healthcare workers, footpath vendors, railway station staff, Ayush and angawadi staff, BMTC and KSRTC staff, delivery boys, salespersons, pourakarmikas and slumdwellers.
