- India is all set to join the powerful 15-nation Security Council as a non-permanent member. India is a candidate for a non-permanent seat from the Asia-Pacific category for the 2021-22 term.
- India's victory is certain since it is the sole candidate vying for the lone seat from the grouping. New Delhi's candidature was unanimously endorsed by the 55-member Asia-Pacific grouping, including China and Pakistan, in June last year.

Beijing cancels flights, shuts schools over new virus outbreak
- Beijing's airports cancelled more than 1,200 flights and schools in the Chinese capital were closed again on Wednesday as authorities rushed to contain a new coronavirus outbreak linked to a wholesale food market.
- The city reported 31 new cases on Wednesday while officials urged residents not to leave Beijing, with fears growing about a second wave of infections in China, which had largely brought its outbreak under control.
- Tens of thousands of people linked to the new Beijing virus cluster -- believed to have started in the sprawling Xinfadi wholesale food market -- are being tested, with almost 30 residential compounds in the city now under lockdown.
- Officials have closed 11 markets and disinfected thousands of food and beverage businesses in Beijing after the outbreak was detected.
- Meanwhile, several provinces were quarantining travellers from Beijing, where all schools -- which had mostly reopened -- have been ordered to close again and return to online classes. (AFP)
Asian markets swing as second wave fears offset recovery hopes
- Asian markets fluctuated through the morning with profit-takers also cashing in after Tuesday's big run-up. Hong Kong was up 0.2 percent and Tokyo went into the break 0.7 percent lower a day after a near-five percent surge.
- Shanghai, Sydney and Singapore edged down 0.1 percent with Seoul 0.2 percent off. Manila and Jakarta were up almost one percent while Wellington jumped more than two percent. (AFP)
Fire at warehouse in Greater Noida, none hurt
- A fire broke out early Wednesday at a warehouse of spare parts of an automobile company in Greater Noida, officials said.
- No one was injured in the incident that was reported around 5 am at the facility in the Surajpur area, they said.
- Around a dozen fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the blaze was controlled completely around 8 am, an official from the local police station said. (PTI)

Indian-American businessman charged with COVID-19 relief fraud
- An Indian-American owner of several information technology companies in the Chicago area has been charged with COVID-19 relief fraud running into USD400,000, federal prosecutors have said.
- Rahul Shah (51) has been charged in a criminal complaint filed in the Northern District of Illinois with bank fraud and making false statements to a financial institution.
- According to the complaint, Shah filed a bank loan application that fraudulently sought more than USD400,000 in a forgivable Paycheck Protection Program loan guaranteed by the Small Business Administration under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

Brazil reports highest daily jump in virus cases
- The country, which has the second-highest number of coronavirus cases and deaths in the world, after the United States, reported 34,918 new cases and 1,282 new deaths in the past 24 hours.
- That brought Brazil's total caseload to more than 923,000, and its death toll to 45,241.
- Experts say under-testing in the country of 212 million people probably means the real figures are much higher.
- The grim new record came as the World Health Organization's top official for the Americas again voiced concern over the situation in Brazil.(AFP)

Mexico records 3rd highest daily death numbers
- Even as Mexico announced plans for reopening churches and religious events, the country posted near-record numbers of newly confirmed cases and deaths from COVID-19 on Tuesday.
- The Health Department reported that confirmed cases rose by 4,599, the second-highest daily increase to date, to reach an accumulated total of 154,863.
- Deaths rose by 730, the third-highest daily confirmation number, after one-day increases of 1,092 and 816 earlier this month.

North Korea's military to reenter inter-Korea cooperation sites
- North Korea will redeploy troops to now-shuttered inter-Korean cooperation sites, reinstall guard posts and resume military exercises at front-line areas, nullifying the landmark reconciliation deals reached with South Korea just two years ago.
- The announcement came a day after North Korea destroyed an inter-Korean liaison office in a choreographed display of anger that puts pressure on Washington and Seoul amid deadlocked nuclear diplomacy.
Oil falls on rise in U.S. crude stocks, virus resurgence fears
- Oil prices retreated on Wednesday, weighed down by an increase in U.S. crude inventories and worries about a potential second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.
- Brent crude futures were down 40 cents, or 1.0%, at $40.56 a barrel as of 0047 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures fell 59 cents, or 1.5%, to $37.79 a barrel.
Shooting in shopping mall in Dallas, US

- PTI said a person was reported to have sustained injuries in the shooting Tuesday evening.
- A police spokeswoman confirmed that a shooting had taken place at the Galleria Dallas shopping mall.
