Though 2020 is going to be riddled with challenges for the automobile sector, Martin Schwenk, Managing Director and CEO of India's largest luxury car company, Mercedes-Benz India, said that he is starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

"The coronavirus crisis is the black swan that nobody saw coming. We expect to come back on track, but that will take some time. I am already a little bit positive because I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, (with the) opening (up) after the lockdown,” said Schwenk, while speaking at the digital launch of its largest and most luxurious SUV, the newest generation of the GLS – popularly referred to as the S-Class of SUV - on Wednesday.

Sentiments are slowly coming back and customers’ confidence will certainly improve, he added. Talking about the year, he said, “Looking at our brand, we also have a year of transition. Key volume models are in changeover. And this causes some constraints to us. The positive part is that we are launching 10 models over the year,” he said.

Currently, India has over 37,000 Mercedes SUVs plying on the road, he said. 2020 is going to be an SUV year for the company, he added.
