Sushant Singh Rajput’s suicide has compelled many to revisit the debate on nepotism and the reign of the alleged ‘mean girl’ camp in Bollywood. Many of the late actor’s fans believe that he wasn’t given his due in the industry despite the tremendous growth and success he achieved all because he was deemed an ‘outsider’, someone who did not come from a Bollywood background and without a ‘Godfather’. This has directly impacted the rapid decrease in fan following of certain stars and Bollywood honchos, who, fans feel, were part of the ‘mean girl’ group. At the same time, it has also led to a staggering increase in followers by millions within the past few days for certain stars, owing to the public stand they took against favouritism in the Hindi cinema. People are asking why movies with a glamorous star cast are usually the ones gaining all limelight at award functions. They’re asking why mediocre actors with influence end up raking in a lot of awards when a great actor with no connection is left out, most times.
