GREATER NOIDA: A 30-year-old Nigerian man, disturbed because of financial troubles, allegedly threw his three-month-old daughter to the floor after being woken up by her cries before picking her up, walking to the lobby and flinging the baby out of the second-floor window.
The baby was declared dead on arrival at a nearby hospital where her mother and neighbours rushed her.
Ozioma Declan, the accused, had been living with his wife Julie in Imperial Society of Ecotech 3 since December, 2018. The couple gave birth to their first daughter, Adugo, three months ago.
Declan collected hair from local salons and beauty parlours and sold it to Nigerian companies manufacturing wigs. But as no salon had opened since the last week of March because of the lockdown, Declan had no income, making it difficult for him to even pay the house rent, police said.
Declan was arrested following a complaint by his wife Julie. She wrote in her complaint that since Declan’s income had virtually become nil, the family was going through “a rough patch”. “His responses were aggressive for the past few days. At times, I even got scared of him. But never had I thought this man could be so cruel to his own daughter, who had just come to this world three months ago,” Julie wrote in her complaint.
DCP (central Noida) Harish Chander said it was around 6am when Declan was woken up by his daughter’s cries. “His wife told us he was disturbed for the past few days and would often get irritated even at the smallest reason. The baby had woken up before her parents and had started crying. The man became irritated. He picked up the baby and hurled her on the floor. And before his wife could intervene, he picked up the baby again, went out into the lobby outside their flat and flung her out of the window,” he added.
Julie ran behind him, but couldn’t catch up. “Everything happened so quickly, there was no time to react. I rushed to the ground floor. My three-month-old daughter was there, oozing blood and motionless,” she said. Guards at the society and neighbours helped the woman take the baby to the hospital. She was declared dead on arrival.
An FIR under IPC Section 302 (murder) was registered against Declan. “A police team reached the society soon after they got the information. The man was arrested from his house and remanded in judicial custody. The Nigerian embassy was also informed about the case,” Chander said.
