People sharing bank details embarrass themselves: CP

Nagpur: City police chief BK Upadhyay in a live session over a social media platform on Monday said educated people who share their banking details or one-time passwords (OTPs) over phone with strangers are an embarrassment for themselves.
He also stated there was 70% rise in credibility of police department during lockdown enforcement as per a national survey. He also mentioned the challenges in the coming days with the Covid crisis peaking.
Upadhyay, during a chat moderated by Ramkishan Ojha of Prabhatai Ojha Smruti Seva Sanstha, said there was spurt in cybercrime during the lockdown as people opted to use the online media more.
“Do not click on the links sent by an unknown caller or share your details including any OTP. Even some educated people have committed such blunders and later felt awkward while sharing their mistakes with me,” he said. Upadhyay stated the cyber cell has been given more manpower including officers who are now tackling these cybercrooks.
Upadhyay said the unlockdown phase was trickier from policing point of view with more relaxations than the lockdown phase. “We are not chasing criminals here. We are dealing with common citizens. Hence, the strategy is to create awareness, convince (to wear mask, maintain Covid distancing and sanitization) and then take action if someone still disobeys,” he said.
Upadhyay also said there was 28% dip in the crime rate during the lockdown. “We witnessed some crimes taking place and immediately launched ‘Operation Crackdown’ to reign in the goons,” he said. The top cop also said people should co-operate more to cope with the national crisis.
