Railway recruitment has again become an issue after political parties raised questions over low success rate of people from Tamil Nadu in exams for jobs in Southern Railway.

CHENNAI: Railway recruitment has again become an issue after political parties raised questions over low success rate of people from Tamil Nadu in exams for jobs in Southern Railway.
A departmental recruitment of 96 Goods Guard through a written exam conducted by Railway Recruitment Cell, Chennai, from among employees, has kicked up a controversy after results showed that only five candidates from Tamil Nadu qualified for the posts.
More than 3,000 employees wrote the online test for general departmental recruitment of Goods Guard held on February 29 and March 11, 2020 and results were published a couple of days ago.
MP of Madurai Lok Sabha constituency S Venkatesan and PMK leader S Ramdoss have raised a doubt on the conduct of the examinations as a majority of the candidates who passed belonged to other states. The PMK has called for a re-test.
Sources said that around 1,000 employees hailing from Tamil Nadu and Kerala and 2,000 employees from other states wrote the test. The rank list shows that the cut off marks is 73.56 for unreserved, 69.06 for OBC, 69.36 for ST and 60 for SC category of applicants. This shows that many of those from Tamil Nadu did not score the qualifying marks.
A Janakiraman, working president of Dakshin Railway Employees Union (DREU) said "We have to train and prepare our youngsters on the lines of NEET training to help them compete in railway recruitment examinations. There are coaching classes for aspirants in northern states. They continue to prepare for departmental exams after duty hours RRC valuation is computerized and cannot blame them."
A railway official said that the online test is foolproof and the optical mark recognition (OMR) answer sheets are used. "The number of people from northern states who get selected in recruitment examinations have been high in the past few years because they are keen to have a railway job."
