Two teenage siblings have been left shaken after a shark charged towards them while they were spearfishing.

Taia, 16, and Baxter Hanley, 13, were out spearfishing at Bulli Point in Wollongong, on Sunday when they ran into the shark, believed to be a bronze whaler.

Heartstopping footage of the encounter shows the shark suddenly turning before swimming straight at them.

Taia could be heard screaming at her brother to quickly get out of the way as the pair struggled in the water to escape.

Baxter pointed his speargun at the shark while Taia continued to scream as the shark came within metres of the pair.

But at the last minute the marine predator turned and swam off, leaving Baxter and Taia frightened and shaken.

Their mother Cindy said the experience was frightening for her children, but not stop them from going back into the water.

'It rattled them pretty badly as you can imagine,' she wrote on Facebook.

'But I'm sure they will be back out there soon'.

Their father Scott, commended his children for their bravery.

'[Baxter] did so well to hold it together and keep the spear pointed at [the shark] before walking on water,' the children's father Scott added.

'It's rattled Taia as you can hear from the screams'.

Earlier in the week, another shark was spotted at nearby Austinmer, swimming after a school of fish about 7am on Monday.

A few hours later, another shark was spotted at Thirroul causing beachgoers to leave the water.

The shark eventually turned and swam away from the siblings who were spearfishing
