Leader of opposition Digambar Kamat, on Tuesday, said the increase in fuel prices despite all-time low international crude oil prices “is a torture to the common man.”

Kamat also reiterated the Congress’ demand for a White Paper on the state’s finance and COVID-19 response.

In a press statement issued here on Tuesday, the leader of opposition said that the hike in fuel prices is an insensitive approach on the part of the government.

“The petrol price in Goa has gone up by almost Rs 5.47 per litre and diesel price by Rs 5.80 per litre in last ten days despite the fact that the international crude oil prices are at all-time low. The government is torturing the common man with the steep hike in fuel prices. People will not hesitate to come on the road if the government continues with its insensitive approach towards the common man,” he stated.

He added that the people have faced hardships and pains during the COVID-19 lockdown, and have either lost their jobs or have to incur salary cuts.

“The marginal sector has also suffered due to stoppage of business activities. People are expecting financial help from the government, but the insensitive BJP government is acting just the opposite adding to the woes of people,” he said.

The Congress party has over the past several weeks been demanding with the state government to release a White Paper on the current financial status of Goa and the COVID-19 pandemic, he added.

“It is important that the government places facts and figures before the people at the earliest, failing which the people in panic may resort to taking up strong agitation against the government for which the BJP government will be solely responsible,” stated Kamat.
