KOLHAPUR: Police on Monday detained two minor boys for allegedly raping and pushing a four-year-old girl into a well, leading to her death, in a village near Ichalkaranji. The boys have confessed to the crime, which took place on Saturday, police said.
Police inspector Ishwar Omase told TOI that the boys have been charged under sections 376 (rape) and 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code and under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (Pocso). "They will be produced in a juvenile court on Tuesday," he said.
The boys, neighbours of the girl, lured her with the promise of a chocolate and took her to a nearby deserted place, where they committed the crime.
According to police, the girl's parents started searching for her after she went missing on Saturday evening. Villagers found her body in the private well on Sunday morning. The girl was declared brought dead at a private hospital.
The family buried the body the same day presuming it was an accidental death. However, some residents suspected something was amiss as the well was at a distance from the girl's residence. They alerted the police, who got CCTV footage from a nearby building which showed the two boys with the girl and one of them carrying her on his shoulders.
The girl's body was exhumed and sent for a post-mortem, which confirmed rape and death due to drowning.2 minors detained for rape, murder of 4-year-old girl.
