NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the economy is showing "green shoots" as the country emerges from the coronavirus lockdown and asserted that the fight against the pandemic is a fine example of cooperative federalism where the Centre and the states are working together.
In his opening remarks at a meeting with chief ministers and Lt Governors of states and Union territories, he said one laxity can undo what has been achieved in the fight against Covid-19 and urged people not to lower their guard against the killer virus.

India

  • PM Modi, during the meeting with CMs, said "timing" is very important to deal with any crisis and "decisions taken at the right time have helped a lot in controlling the coronavirus infection in the country".
  • When coronavirus was not even a topic of discussion in many countries, India started preparations to deal with it and started taking decisions. The experience of many states increases the confidence that India can move forward in this crisis of by limiting its losses and can handle its economy faster, PM Modi said.
  • The Union ministry of health informed that the recovery rate of patients suffering from Covid-19 has risen to 52.47 per cent in the country, indicative of the fact that "more than half of positive cases have recovered" from the disease.
  • India has tested 59,21,069 Covid-19 samples and the country now has the capacity to test 3 lakh samples per day, said the ministry of health.
  • India will take a decision on resumption of international passenger flights in July if coronavirus behaves in a “predictable manner” and the entire aviation ecosystem and state governments are onboard, civil aviation minister Hardeep Singh Puri said.
  • Travelling in flight is the "safest" mode of travel when compared to others during a pandemic, said All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi Director Dr Randeep Guleria said.
  • The US handed over to India 100 ventilators, valued at about USD 1.2 million, as part of President Donald Trump's offer of assistance to New Delhi in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • As many as one in five people globally have underlying medical conditions that put them at an increased risk of severe Covid-19, according to a study which may help develop strategies to shield the most vulnerable individuals.
  • The study, published in the journal The Lancet Global Health, noted that 1.7 billion people across the world, comprising 22 per cent of the global population, have at least one underlying condition that puts them at increased risk of severe Covid-19 if infected.

States

  • Tamil Nadu: Tamil Nadu reported 49 Covid-19 deaths, highest in a single day, taking the toll to 528 as 1,515 new cases pushed the tally to 48,019 in the state.
  • Delhi: Health minister Satyendar Jain, who has been hospitalised after running high-grade fever and suffering a sudden drop in his oxygen level, tested negative for Covid-19. The government authorities issued an order asking luxury Taj Mansingh Hotel to have its rooms and premises be placed at the disposal of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital for using it as an attached Covid-19 facility.
  • Arunachal Pradesh: Four more people tested positive for Covid-19 in Arunachal Pradesh, raising the total number of cases in the state to 95.
  • HP: Three more people tested positive for coronavirus in Himachal Pradesh, taking the total number of such cases in the state to 560.
  • Andhra: The marked increase in coronavirus cases in Andhra Pradesh continued as the overall tally touched 6,720 with the addition of 264 in the last 24 hours amid aggressive sample testing by the state government.
  • Uttarakhand: A woman died of novel coronavirus in Nainital district, taking the toll from the pandemic in Uttarakhand to 25, while the number of cases rose to 1,912 with 67 more infections.
  • Assam: The total number of coronavirus cases in Assam reached 4,319 after 10 fresh cases were reported in the state.
  • Meghalaya: Two more persons in Meghalaya have recovered from Covid-19, reducing the number of active cases in the state to 15.
  • MP: A total of 86 people, who had attended a marriage ceremony in Madhya Pradesh's Chhatarpur district last week, have been quarantined after one of the attendees was found to be coronavirus positive.
  • Nagaland: Nagaland reported two new Covid-19 cases, taking the tally to 179. The number of active cases in the state now stands at 79.
  • UP: Uttar Pradesh reported 507 fresh Covid-19 cases and 18 deaths due to the disease. The death toll in the state stands at 435 as the infection tally mounted to 14,598.
  • Puducherry: Puducherry reported 14 fresh Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the aggregate in the Union territory to 216.
  • Mizoram: Four more persons have tested positive for Covid-19 in Mizoram in the last 24 hours, taking the northeast state's tally to 121.
  • Rajasthan: The state government lifted curbs on the interstate movement of people, citing improvement in the coronavirus situation. The government had put restrictions on the interstate movement on June 10 after a sudden spike in coronavirus cases.
  • Odisha: As many as 108 people, including 16 disaster response personnel, have tested positive for Covid-19 in Odisha, taking the state's tally to 4,163
  • Karnataka: An assistant sub-inspector of police who died of heart attack was found to be infected with coronavirus, while two of his colleagues at the police station here have also contracted the infection.
  • Kerala: At least 79 new coronavirus cases were reported in Kerala, taking the total number of active cases in the state to 1,366.

World

  • Low doses of the steroid dexamethasone can reduce deaths by one-third in severely affected Covid-19 patients, according to researchers who assessed the performance of the inexpensive drug in more than 2,100 people.
  • The analysis is part of the RECOVERY (Randomised Evaluation of COVid-19 thERapY) trial which was established to test a range of potential therapies for Covid-19, including low-dose dexamethasone -- a steroid treatment.
  • The novel coronavirus has killed at least 436,813 people since the outbreak emerged in China last December. At least 8,048,880 cases of coronavirus have been registered in 196 countries and territories.
  • The United States is the worst-hit country with 116,127 deaths from 2,114,026 cases. At least 576,334 people have been declared recovered.
  • The Covid-19 cases in Beijing have jumped to 106, a city official said, warning that the situation is "extremely severe" in China's capital where the authorities have mounted massive containment measures including mass testing of about 90,000 people and lockdown around the wholesale market which reported the new infections.
  • The wife of Ukrainain President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has been hospitalized with double pneumonia after contracting the new coronavirus, joining the ranks of several first ladies around the world who got infected with Covid-19 earlier this year. Zelenskiy's office said that Olena Zelenska's condition was stable and the president himself and the couple's children tested negative for the virus.
  • Pakistan's information technology and telecommunications minister Syed Aminul Haq was tested positive for the coronavirus, joining a long list of politicians who have tested positive for the virus that has killed 2,839 people in the country.
  • Nepal has recorded 380 new coronavirus cases, taking the total number of infections in the country to 6,591. The deadly virus has spread to 73 of the total 77 districts in the country.
  • Turkey has made the wearing of face masks mandatory in five more provinces, following an uptick in Covid-19 cases. Health minister Fahrettin Koca tweeted that wearing of masks is now compulsory in 42 of Turkey's 81 provinces.
  • Singapore confirmed 151 new Covid-19 cases among foreign workers, taking the total number of cases to 40,969, as the city-state gears up to begin the second phase of its reopening of businesses.
