The opening of the inter-state borders for the public is one of the key agenda items to be discussed by Punjab governor and UT administrator V P Singh Badnore with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the virtual meeting with chief ministers on Tuesday.
"We understand most of the new cases are of people coming to the city from other states after the opening of the borders. Some states have closed their borders, and they are empowered to do so. But we follow the decisions of the central government. It is an issue of grave concern and will be discussed on Tuesday," sources in the UT said.
Residents are demanding either testing of each person coming to the city or sealing of the borders till the infections drop. Baljinder Singh Bittu, president, Federation of Sectors Welfare Association of Chandigarh, said, "There is a dire need to increase testing in the city. It will enable us to take the required steps to reduce the number of patients."
Charanjeev Singh, president, Chandigarh Beopar Mandal and a nominated municipal councillor, said, "People coming from outstation should be quarantined for at least 14 days. It is necessary as positive cases are pouring in from other states."
