KOLKATA: A young pregnant woman from a West Bengal village who had lost her way while heading to a government hospital in Kolkata was rescued by cops when they found her writhing in pain on the road near Taratala crossing on Sunday afternoon and rushed her to the hospital after realizing she was having contractions because of water breaking.
Following the timely intervention of the cops, the lady delivered a baby girl at Vidyasagar Hospital in Behala. Both the young mother and the baby were safe and are in good health, a senior official of the hospital said on Monday.
The incident happened at Taratala crossing in south Kolkata around 2pm on Sunday when a sergeant spotted the young woman squirming in pain as a lady fruit seller was attending her on the footpath. Realising the woman was pregnant and needed immediate medical attention, the officer contacted his seniors as a team of officers including the officer-in-charge of south west traffic guard reached the place in quick time, stopped a taxi, sanitized its back seat and made the woman lie on the backseat as they escorted the vehicle to Vidyasagar Hospital, around 2 kms away.
“We contacted the assistant superintendent of the hospital and asked her to prepare a bed for the woman as we alerted our colleagues at the hospital outpost to arrange a clear channel for the woman,” said a senior officer of the traffic guard.
As the taxi carrying the woman entered the hospital, a team of medical staff with stretcher and a team of policemen were waiting at the portico. “She was rushed to the labour room and almost immediately an ultrasonography was done before she was wheeled into the operation theatre. After the operation, the woman gave birth to a baby girl. The hospital has even arranged for an attendant to look after the two. Both mother and daughter are fine now,” said the officer.
Police said the 19-year-old woman is a resident of a village in Diamond Harbour in south 24 paganas and had come to Kolkata for her delivery all by herself in a bus but had lost her way as she got down near Majerhat bridge. “We are trying to contact her family members in the village but she is not very keen to share their details. The hospital will release her once she is fit and is in a position to take care of her child,” the officer said.
