'I gave him a pat and he chomped me!' Rogue fox on the loose at a top university bites a string of students - with one trying to befriend the animal because he thought it was a CAT

  • Three University of NSW students have been bitten by a fox roaming campus
  • Each student had their injuries treated in hospital and were given tetanus shots
  • Kevin Wang was the first victim on Saturday when a fox bit and dragged his arm
  • Liz Willer, 20, was the second victim and was bitten after petting the fox
  • When Ms Willer went to hospital, she met yet another student who was bitten

Three unsuspecting students have been bitten by a fox roaming the grounds of a top university.

The students needed hospital treatment and tetanus shots for bite wounds suffered at the University of New South Wales's Kensington campus on the weekend.

The fox, nicknamed Frankie, is now being hunted by campus security who warned there could be several of the feral animals on the loose.

The victim of the first attack, Kevin Wang, shared footage of the fox sniffing his fingers before suddenly biting him on the hand.

The second victim, Liz Willer, 20, a computer engineering student, said she was bitten after patting the fox which she thought was 'really sweet and gentle'.

'Silly me, [I] did pat him for a bit then he chomped me when I pulled away my hand...I have since been informed you shouldn't pat a fox,' she wrote in a UNSW Facebook group.

When she went to the Prince of Wales Hospital for her tetanus shot, she met another UNSW student, 20, who has also been bitten.

The third unnamed victim told Ms Willer that he sat on the ground next to the fox thinking it was a cat.

A UNSW spokesperson confirmed they are aware of the fox sightings.

'UNSW estate management are working to locate the fox and have it removed from campus,' the spokesperson told Sydney Morning Herald

They've also asked students if they spot a fox to not approach or feed it, instead to notify security.

Despite the attacks, students are calling on the fox to be named as the university's mascot.

In 2014, the NSW Government declared foxes as pests which makes it illegal to have them as pets.
