Two other convicts in the case, Mondu Mandal (35) and Kailash Kumar (38) were sentenced to seven years and 10 years in prison along with a fine of Rs 10,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively.
The court had found all three guilty in the case on June 11 following 11 months of trial and reserved the sentencing for June 15.
Public prosecutor S K Jaiswal said the state will appeal at a higher court for enhanced punishment against Kailash. He said, “Kailash is an accomplice in the crime and deserves the same punishment as Rinku.”
On the night of July 25, 2019, Rinku abducted the child sleeping with her mother, Rakima Khatoon, from platform no. 1 of Tatanagar railway station here. He then took her to the fabrication yard of the ISWP company, an isolated place at Ramdin Bagan about 4km from the station. Rinku then called Kailash and both raped the child after consuming alcohol. When the girl cried, they slit her neck, beheaded her with a sharp weapon, stashed the body in a sack and dumped it near the boundary wall of ISWP company in the early hours of July 26, 2019.
The girl’s mother, Rakima, lodged a missing person report with the GRP Tatanagar after she could not find her. The GRP and the district police conducted an extensive probe into the case and arrested Rinku, based on CCTV footages, from his Ramdin Bagan area on July 30. Rinku identified his accomplice as Kailash, who was later arrested from his Kashidih residence. The beheaded body of the girl was found from the crime scene on August 9. The head was found a week later after some stray dogs were nibbling on it.
Notably, Rakima was eloping with the other convict, Monu, a resident of Sahebganj, and they got down at Tatanagar station to change trains on their way to Odisha. Monu’s connivance in the crime was established during the interrogation of Rinku and Kailash.
Monu, a resident was subsequently arrested after his connivance with the other two accused proved during the course of interrogation of Rinku and Kailash.
