HYDERABAD:
Telangana on Monday went past the 5,000 mark with 219 fresh coronavirus cases, taking the total tally to 5,193. Two more persons died, taking the death toll to 187.
From March 2, when the first Covid-19 case surfaced, the numbers have seen the fastest jump so far between June 10 and June 15.
"While it took nearly two months for the first 1,000 cases to be recorded and one month for the next 1,000 cases, the numbers have jumped exponentially in the last five days," said a senior official from the state health department.
He attributed the surge in cases to relaxation in lockdown.
"People have started moving around without taking many precautions and in the process, we are seeing an increase in cases. This is the time when people need to be extra careful," he said.
