Facing 28 criminal cases, NDPS accused commit suicide in Ambala police custody

AMBALA: An accused who was arrested with 20gm heroin on Saturday, committed suicide in the lock-up of crime investigation agency (CIA)-I office at around 3.30am on Sunday, said the Ambala police.
The deceased accused has been identified as Rinku of Chhota Shivala, Kaccha Bazaar, Ambala Cantonment.
“Accused Rinku was arrested with 20gm heroin from his possession under limits of Ambala Sadar police station on Saturday by our team. A case under Section 21 (punishment for contravention in relation to manufactured drugs and preparations) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act was registered against him on Saturday at Ambala Sadar police station. He was scheduled to be presented in a local court on Sunday, but during around 3.30am, he committed suicide in the lock-up by hanging himself using his pants as a rope. He hanged himself with the iron grill of lock-up”, said inspector Kewal Singh, in-charge, CIA-I Ambala.
“Rinku had been involved in about 28 cases of loot, dacoity, attempt to murder, attempt to suicide twice, theft, and of Arms Act in Punjab, Ambala and Karnal”, said inspector Kewal.
Ambala headquarters DSP Sultan Singh said, “Acting on a tip-off, Ambala CIA-I had arrested Rinku on Saturday after recovering 20gm heroin from his possession. He had been involved in 28 criminal cases and from past some time, our teams were receiving inputs about his activity that he is smuggling drugs and luring youths to consume the same. After his arrest, his wife had come to meet him at CIA-I office and they had a heated argument on Saturday. Rinku committed suicide during the early hours on Sunday before he could be presented in the court. The police were alert that he had attempted suicide two times earlier as well but still he managed to do so. The matter will be inquired by a magistrate level officer.”
“After conducting post-mortem, his body was handed over to the family members for last rites”, said DSP Sultan.
