In a week, Covid wards in Gurgaon see number of critical patients rise

Gurgaon: The number of critical Covid patients — those who are on ventilators or need oxygen supply — across city hospitals jump from just two till June 4 to 28 as of June 12, according to health department data. The number of Covid deaths also spiked from four to nineteen — second-highest in Haryana — in the same period.
On June 4, Gurgaon had just two critical cases which increased to 10 on June 7, 14 on June 9, 15 on June 10 and 28 on June 12.
On Friday, the district added a total of 185 new cases to its tally, taking the number to 2,922. It now has 1,927 active Covid-19 cases.
As per the data, the Covid-19 positivity rate (a ratio of people testing positive to total samples collected) of the state went up from 1.84% to 3.92% during the period from June 1 to June 12, during which the fatality rate also worsened from 0.89% to 1.11%.
The rate of doubling of cases accelerated from 9 days to 8 days in Haryana, and the recovery rate dropped to 39% from 50%.
Out of 6,334 total cases in Haryana, Gurgaon alone accounts for more than 45% cases. The other two districts that contribute significantly to the state’s tally are Faridabad and Sonipat.
These three districts of Haryana reported over 4,000 cases, and 51 of the total 70 deaths so far.
Virender Yadav, chief medical officer, Gurgaon, said, “The Covid deaths in the districts were all patients who had co-morbid conditions and some were above 60 years of age. We will be analysing if there is a rise in critical cases in Gurgaon.”
Yadav highlighted that the health department, along with the district administration, is ramping up sample collection, active contact-tracing and house-to-house surveys to curb the spread of the infection.
Meanwhile, vice-president of the Haryana chapter of Indian Medical Association, Naresh Sharma, said, “The Covid-19 patients who died in Gurgaon had co-morbid conditions such as diabetes, cardiac issues, hypertension, anxiety and others. As per our data, there are more people with co-morbid conditions in Gurgaon and Faridabad compared to the rest of Haryana. Hence, the two districts are witnessing more deaths. Yes, there is a rise in critical patients as well. This is because people have low immunity in an urban structure.”
