Confirmed cases of Covid-19 in India crossed the 3-lakh mark, as the country became fourth-most infected in the world.

The world’s second-most populous nation added 11,458 fresh cases in the last 24 hours taking the total tally to 3,08,993, according to the health ministry's 8 a.m. update on June 13. This includes 8,884 deaths and 1,54,330 patients who have recovered.

Authorities reported 386 deaths and 7,135 recoveries over the last 24 hours.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to hold talks with state chief ministers next week amid the continued spread of the virus in the country. Even with the rising cases, authorities continued to assert that there is no community transmission in the country.

The Supreme Court has, however, taken cognisance of the increase in cases and issued notices to Delhi, Maharashtra, Gujarat, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu on their handling of the pandemic. On Friday, Maharashtra became the first state in the country to cross the grim milestone of one lakh cases.

Globally, cases had crossed 76 lakh leaving over 4.25 lakh people dead as of Saturday morning.

The U.S. might need new lockdowns if cases surge dramatically, top health officials said, as they forecast as many as 140,000 deaths by Independence Day on July 4. Brazil’s death toll passed the U.K. to become the second highest in the world.
