Law Assn condemns death threats

THE LAW ASSOCIATION says it is deeply concerned about reports of threats to the life of a High Court judge.

In Wednesday, after he left court at the San Fernando High Court, Justice Frank Seepersad received a hand-written death threat in an envelope delivered to his home. Also in the envelope was a ‘live’ round of 9 mm ammunition.

The letter read: “You R A HOL Racist A Infidel, A evil maN Fed up of U ResigN OK shot call. THis would look nice betweeN your Eyes.”

In its statement, the association said, “The Judiciary is the guardian of justice and the cornerstone of a democratic society based on the rule of law.

“Judges are entrusted with the fundamental role of the protection of rights and must, at all cost, be able to function without fear, favour, bias or prejudice.

“Such threats are extremely disturbing and are, in no uncertain terms, an attempt to directly undermine the authority and independence of the Judiciary.”

It strongly condemned “such attacks on the Judiciary” and said it was confident that the police service will continue to thoroughly investigate and promptly bring the perpetrator(s) to justice.

This is the second time in six months that Seepersad has received a death threat. On December 27, he also received a handwritten note and a bullet sent by mail.
