20 vanniyar men arrested for throwing stones at cops and trying to attack dalits in TN village

VILLUPURAM: Six police personnel, including a woman inspector and two sub-inspectors, suffered injuries in a stone pelting by a mob of vanniyar men near Ulundurpet in Kallakurichi district of Tamil Nadu on Friday night.
The stone pelting happened after police stopped the mob that tried to enter Kiliyur dalit colony to launch an indiscriminate attack on the dalits over the elopement of a vanniyar community woman with a dalit youth five days ago.
Police arrested 20 vanniyar men for attacking cops and trying to launch an attack on dalit colony.
Police said vanniyar woman K Suganya, 23, of Vadamambakkam Poovanur village, who was working at a private firm in Chennai, had been in love with dalit youth T Elangovan, 25, of Kiliyur for more than five years. They developed the love affair while they were studying in Ulundurpet. Elangovan is working at a private company in Hosur.
Suganya eloped with Elangovan after her parents had begun to search a groom for her.
Three days ago, her parents came to know about her love affair with the dalit youth. They lodged a woman missing complaint with the Thirunavalur police.
Suganya’s family members wanted Elangovan’s family members to hand over the girl to them before Friday evening. They warned them of dire consequences if they failed to do so.
Fearing communal riot massive, police personnel were deployed at Kiliyur on Friday.
Ulundurpet DSP P V Vijay Kumar said, “As the woman was not handed over to her parents by Friday evening, a mob of vanniyar men from Vadamambakkam Poovanur village attempted to barge into Kiliyur dalit colony to launch an indiscriminate attack. When they were denied entry into the colony, a clash broke out between police and vanniyar men. The mob threw stones at the cops. “
Six police personnel, including Thirunavalur inspector Viji, Ulundurpet police station sub-inspectors Jayachandran and Vinoth Kumar and three other police constables suffered injuries. They were admitted to Ulundurpet Government Hospital.
