COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore city police have come first in Tamil Nadu when it comes to reducing the number of fatalities in road mishaps.
As many as 24 people lost their lives in road mishaps in Coimbatore city from January 1 to June 10 this year. Last year, the same period, 60 people lost their lives in the city. “We have reduced the fatalities in road mishaps by 60%,” said R Mutharasu, deputy commissioner of police (traffic), Coimbatore city.
Police officials said the lockdown that came into force on March 24 was the main reason for less fatalities in road mishaps in the seven cities.
There are other reasons too. “We have 163 CCTV cameras on traffic signals across the city and the cameras have features to capture the registration numbers, motorists with not wearing helmets, triple riding. The cameras would take the photographs of the motorists if they are involved violations and would send them to the traffic police control room. The image of violations with fine amount details used to be uploaded on Parivahan website,” Mutharasu said.
“We have ‘Police-E-Eye’ app and cops and the general public were sending photos of traffic violations through the app. Such violation details were also uploaded on the Parivahan website. Such actions helped us reduce the accident rates drastically in Coimbatore city,” he said.
Madurai and Salem city police have got the second and the third positions, respectively, among seven cities in the state.
As many as 36 people lost their lives in road accidents in Madurai city this year. In the same period last year, 86 people died. Madurai city police reduced the fatalities by 55%.
The Salem city police have come third by reducing the fatalities by 47%. As many as 28 people lost their lives in road mishaps from January 1 to June 10,2020. In the same period last year, 53 people lost their lives.
The Chennai city police have come fourth by reducing the fatal in road mishaps by 45%. This year, 332 people died in road mishap in Chennai. In the same period last year, 610 people died in the mishap.
The Tirupur city police (27 %), the Tirunelveli city police (20%) and the Trichy police (17%) have occupied the next three positions.
