Storm chance looms over Brisbane as south-east set for soggy Sunday

Winter storms could hit Brisbane this weekend, along with a rainy Sunday tipped for much of south-east Queensland.

A surface trough deepening in the interior is expected to drop 15 to 30 millimetres of rain across large parts of the region as it sweeps across the southern half of the state.

But the wet weather is expected to be short-lived, with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting a return to cooler, drier conditions on Monday.

The bureau's winter outlook suggested above average ocean temperatures were likely to bring a wetter winter for the state.

Bureau meteorologist Rosa Hoff said the Sunday showers would likely span "quite a large area of the south-east" as rainfall moved towards the coast in a band extending from Emerald to the NSW border.

Late thunderstorms are possible late on Saturday, becoming more concentrated in the south-east corner on Sunday.

"We have a chance of a thunderstorm over Brisbane itself," Ms Hoff said.

"[But] we're not expecting them to be very big."

The bureau expects temperatures to be well above average over the weekend, particularly the overnight minimums. This will ease into Monday.

The capital is expected to reach a maximum of 24 degrees on Saturday before dropping just five degrees overnight.

Sunday should bring a top of 23 degrees in the city, with similar temperatures forecast on the Gold and Sunshine coast.

Further west, both minimums and maximums in Toowoomba and the Lockyer Valley should stay about three to five degrees cooler.
