MUMBAI: With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) expecting monsoon onset over Mumbai by Sunday, the city can expect a wet spell all through next week with heavy to very heavy rains forecast at a few places on the first two days of the coming week itself.
The rainfall in June so far has been promising for the city already with above normal rains recorded by both Colaba and Santacruz observatory.
The total rain reported since June 1 this year by the IMD Colaba observatory has been 212.5 mm which is 76.3 mm above normal and IMD Santacruz has been 188.8 mm which is 62.6 mm above normal.
Shubhangi Bhute, scientist IMD-Mumbai, said, "As on Saturday, southwest monsoon has further advanced into some more parts of Madhya Maharashtra and most parts of Marathwada and Vidarbha. In the next 24 hours it is expected to cover the entire state including Mumbai. There is a likelihood of heavy rains as well in some areas as well," she said.
For Monday and Tuesday the IMD has issued a orange alert and the mega city as well as Thane and Palghar can expect heavy rains at isolated places. An orange alert indicates heavy to very heavy rain at a few places. Between June 12-13 (8.30 am-8.30 am), light rainfall was recorded by the IMD Colaba observatory which was of 1.5 mm and IMD Santacruz observatory of 2.1mm.
