Prodigal celebrity chef, John Torode (UK’s MasterChef) finds a lot has changed in 30 years in his hometown of Sydney. He wants his British audience to understand that we’ve “come a long way since prawns on the barbie”. As if to illustrate this, after a stroll through Cabramatta with restaurateur Pauline Nguyen (Filthy Rich & Homeless, SBS OnDemand), he puts a prawn, along with a choko, on a wok in the mall. Next he has an aged beef-off with old mate, Neil Perry.

Having painted a picture of 1950s Adelaide and the neighbouring outback in deceptively muted hues, this Maralinga drama just gets better. There is a steady creep of things not right – ASIO bozos hunting Commies in leafy streets, strange balloons adrift, Aboriginal people where they officially aren’t. There are strong performances all round, notably in this episode from Ewen Leslie, Tony Martin and Sibylla Budd. Jessica De Gouw shines in a stronger role than her doe-eyed victim in Ten’s The Secrets She Keeps.

Along with the international reality pop stars, the local second-chancers and the immediate family of at least one of the judges, this year’s talent pool was starting to look like the local swimming complex operating under eased restrictions. Then the weird and the wonderful turned up. With just one more night of blind auditions to go before the audience disappears and the coaching begins, expect some more performers out of the box, not least of which is opera singer, Clarissa Spata (pictured).
