5 celebrity couples that met on social media to get inspired by, if you're looking for love in lockdown

From Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas to Mandy Moore and Taylor Goldsmith, these celebrity couples had their meet-cute on Instagram and Twitter's direct messaging feature

Social media in 2020 has become a companion for most us—it keeps us updated with the news, entertains us with memes and allows us to stay connected with our friends in more ways than one. However, the platform has found another use—the direct messaging feature on Twitter and Instagram has turned into the millennial meet-cute, and with the world social distancing, it is now the virtual equivalent of the first conversation at a loud bar or a coffee shop. So if you were planning to slide into that person's DMs but weren't too sure, these celebrity couples who met online may change your mind. Scroll ahead to read about how direct messaging on social media played cupid for them.

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas

As the story that's now celebrity folklore goes, Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas Jonas texted each other for a year before they actually met. “It was Nick who sent the first message,” Chopra revealed to Vogue. He direct messaged her on twitter on September 8, 2016 and wrote, “I’m hearing from a few mutual friends that we should meet,” Jonas revealed. “She responded day of with a message that said, ‘My team can read this. Why don’t you just text me.’” And the rest as they say is history—the couple has been happily married for over a year now and are proud parents to two pups, Diana Chopra and Gino The German

Sonam Kapoor Ahuja and Anand Ahuja

Sonam Kapoor Ahuja and Anand Ahuja got married in Mumbai and #EverydayPhenomenal and #SonamKiShaadi took over everyone's feed in May 2018. Though the duo had actually met at a mutual friends gathering, they spoke for the first time on Snapchat. “The first time we met, we talked about our respective work, revealed Anand Ahuja. However, Snapchat is where the initial spark came to life. “We were chatting on Snapchat one night and she said, ‘Stop texting, just call me.’ And we spoke for two hours that night…Our friendship started over superficial things like vegan chocolates and sneakers but soon we were having deeper conversations,” Anand shared in an interview with Vogue

Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas

2016 was a special year for two of the Jonas brothers as Joe Jonas also met Sophie Turner in the same year. However, the couple, who are now expecting a baby, kept their romance away from the shutterbugs for while. In 2019, they tied the knot in not one, but two ceremonies—Turner and Jonas got married in an impromptu ceremony in Las Vegas which was followed by an intimate ceremony in France. But the first time the two spoke was on Instagram. “We had a lot of mutual friends and they'd been trying to introduce us for a long time. We were following each other on Instagram and he direct messaged me one fine day, out of the blue,” Turner revealed in an interview in 2019. After a few weeks of texting each other, the couple met for the first time in London.

Mandy Moore and Taylor Goldsmith

The This Is Us star Mandy Moore opened up how she's grateful for social media for introducing her to her now husband Taylor Goldsmith, the frontman for the band Dawes. Remembering the story, she revealed in an interview with People, “I heard one of their songs on the radio and went on iTunes to find it and that's where I found out they had a new record coming out. I took a picture of their album and posted it on Instagram,” said Moore. Being new to the ’gram, she wasn’t aware of the tagging feature, however, it was serendipitous and Goldsmith saw the post and sent a note to her team. This resulted in the couple emailing each other and getting to know one another. “Thanks Instagram, for helping me meet my fiancé!” Moore told People

Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor

Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor had met for the first time when they were both in different relationships. Years later, the two reunited with the help of Twitter. Paulson in an interview with Watch What Happens Live! revealed, the couple “breezed by each other” during an event at actor Martha Plimpton's house and this led to them to reach out to one another on social media. Fellow guest Billy Eichner at the show asked, “Holland Taylor slid into your DMs?!”, Paulson replied: “She actually did!”
