Puducherry man dies of Covid-19

PUDUCHERRY: An 83-year-old man with multiple health complications, who tested positive for Covid-19, died in Puducherry on Thursday. He is the first Puducherry resident to die in the Union territory after testing positive for Covid-19.
The man from Muthialpet in the town limits was undergoing treatment in Indira Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute (IGMC).
Director of health and family welfare service S Mohankumar said the man was admitted to Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital with multiple health ailments on June 9. He was shifted to IGMC after he had tested positive for Covid-19. The octogenarian did not respond to treatment.
Mohankumar said all the 47 healthcare workers in the general hospital and medical college, who treated the deceased patient, tested negative.
Two patients from Tamil Nadu (a 44-year-old man from Chennai and an 82-year-old man from Villupuram district) died in Puducherry in the last one week. Villupuram patient's death has been included in Puducherry's account.
Earlier, a Mahe resident died in a Kerala hospital. But his death was included in Kerala’s account. Mahe is the Union territory of Puducherry's enclave in Kerala.
Twelve people - 10 from Puducherry and two from Mahe - tested positive on Thursday taking the total number of cases reported in the Union territory to 157.
Presently, there are 88 active cases. Forty two patients are undergoing treatment in Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer), 40 in IGMC and four in Mahe Government General Hospital. Two Puducherry residents are undergoing treatment in Chennai hospitals.
Sixty seven people recovered and were discharged from the hospitals including the seven on Thursday.
Healthcare authorities have sent 8,954 swab samples for testing and 8,712 of them tested negative. The test results of 86 samples are awaited.
Health minister Malladi Krishna Rao said the government would take a call on imposing stringent lockdown measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19 after reviewing the measures taken by neighbouring Tamil Nadu.
