The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Wednesday directed the State government to file counter affidavit in a plea seeking to quash the detention of a youth from Nagercoil under Goondas Act.

Madurai: A habeas corpus petition filed by Thangapandian of Nagercoil came up for hearing before a Division Bench of Justices P N Prakash and B Pugalendhi.
The petitioner stated that his son Kasi alias Suji (26) of Ganesapuram main road, Nagercoil, was booked on charges of cheating, extortion, crimes against women and cases concerning cybercrime by the Kottar police in Kanniyakumari district. All such cases after framing charges were booked against his son on April 24. Kasi was then detained under the Goondas Act on April 29. The petitioner said all such charges made against Kasi were baseless and false, moreover procedures were also not followed in invoking the Act and hence sought the intervention of the bench to quash Goondas Act against Kasi.
Following the hearing, the bench directed the government to respond in this regard and adjourned the case for the next four weeks. Sources said that Kasi was active on social media and created many fake ID’s to target wealthy girls, and extorted money from them.
On May 4, when the police produced Kasi before Mahila Court in Nagercoil, the court allowed the police to take the accused into their custody for three days. On May 28, all six cases filed by Kottar, Vadasery and Nesamony Nagar police in the district were transferred to the Crime Branch Crime Investigation Department (CBCID), sources said.
